Nomenclatural History
The species Pirella staleyi was originally described and validly published by Schlesner and Hirsch 1984. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 61 in 1986. Starr et al. established as a later homotypic synonym of Starr et al. 1983 in 1983. Schlesner and Hirsch replaced this illegitimate name with (Schlesner and Hirsch 1984) Schlesner and Hirsch 1987 emend. Hahnke et al. 2016 in 1987.

The name Pirella Schlesner and Hirsch 1984 is illegitimate because of precedence of the fungal genus Pirella Bainier 1883 (Rule 51b(4)) It is replaced by Pirellula staleyi.
