The species Geobacter bemidjiensis was originally described and validly published by Nevin et al. 2005. In 2019, Xu et al. established Geobacter bemidjiensis as the basonym of
Geomonas bemidjiensis (Nevin et al. 2005) Xu et al. 2020
. In 2020, Waite et al. established Geobacter bemidjiensis as the basonym of
Citrifermentans bemidjiense (Nevin et al. 2005) Waite et al. 2020
.
