The species Marinovum algicola was originally described and validly published by Martens et al. 2006. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. Martens et al. formed this name in 2006 by placing the species (Lafay et al. 1995) Uchino et al. 1999 into the genus Martens et al. 2006.
