Artecel sciences, Inc. announces in vitro proof-of-principle studies supporting the utility of adipose tissue as a source of differentiated human cells

DOI:10.1138/2001017

In a poster presentation during a recent conference, Artecel Sciences, Inc. presented studies that show that adipose-derived stromal cells can be manipulated to differentiate into cells resembling adipocytes (mature fat cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), or osteoblasts (bone cells). The isolated stromal cells are also capable of supporting blood cell formation by hematopoietic stem cells. Fat, the source of adipose-derived stromal cells, is abundant and easily accessible and thus could provide abundant supplies of cells for four potential clinical applications: soft tissue cosmesis, hematopoietic support in bone marrow transplantation and repair of bone and cartilage.
