The species Leuconostoc mesenteroides was originally described by van Tieghem 1878. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1983, Garvie reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Tsenkovskii 1878) van Tieghem 1983 .
