The species Rhodocyclus gelatinosus was originally described and validly published by Imhoff et al. 1984. Imhoff et al. formed this name in 1984 by placing the species
Rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa (Molisch 1907) van Niel 1944 (Approved Lists 1980)
into the genus Rhodocyclus Pfennig 1978 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Imhoff et al. 1984. In 1991, Willems et al. established Rhodocyclus gelatinosus as the basonym of
Rubrivivax gelatinosus (Molisch 1907) Willems et al. 1991
