This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 66 in 1998. The species Methylocaldum gracile was originally described by Romanovskaya et al. 1978. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1997 the name was revived by Bodrossy et al..
