The species Azotobacter macrocytogenes was originally described by Jensen 1955. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1962, Baillie et al. established Azotobacter macrocytogenes as the basonym of
Azomonas macrocytogenes (ex Baillie et al. 1962) New and Tchan 1982
. In 1979, Thompson and Skerman established Azotobacter macrocytogenes as the basonym of
Azomonotrichon macrocytogenes (Jensen 1955) Thompson and Skerman 1981
.
