The species Citreicella manganoxidans was originally described by Rajasabapathy et al. 2015. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 168 in 2016. In 2018, Wirth and Whitman established Citreicella manganoxidans as the basonym of
Salipiger manganoxidans (Rajasabapathy et al. 2016) Wirth and Whitman 2018
