The subspecies Streptococcus halichoeri halichoeri was originally described by Shewmaker et al. 2016. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 170 in 2016. In 2016, Shewmaker et al. reduced Lawson et al. 2004 emend. Shewmaker et al. 2016 to the rank of subspecies.
