The species Bacteroides macacae was originally described and validly published by Coykendall et al. 1980. Coykendall et al. elevated the subspecies
Bacteroides melaninogenicus macacae Slots and Genco 1980
to the rank of species to form this name in 1980. In 1995, Love established Bacteroides macacae as the basonym of
Porphyromonas macacae (Slots and Genco 1980) Love 1995
. Love established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Porphyromonas salivosa (Love et al. 1987) Love et al. 1992
in 1995.
