The genus Alistipes was originally proposed by Rautio et al. 2003. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 94 in 2003. García-López et al. published an emended description of this genus in 2019. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Sakamoto et al. in 2020.
