The species Streptococcus halichoeri was originally described and validly published by Lawson et al. 2004. Shewmaker et al. published an emended description of this species in 2016. In 2016, Shewmaker et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Lawson et al. 2004) Shewmaker et al. 2016 .
