The species Thermobacteroides acetoethylicus was originally described by Ben-Bassat and Zeikus 1981. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 11 in 1983. In 1993, Rainey and Stackebrandt established as the basonym of (Ben-Bassat and Zeikus 1983) Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993 .
