The cancer stem cell hypothesis. Only the cancer SC is capable of initiating tumor growth and giving rise to the diverse population of cancer cells (represented by different colored cells). Cancer SCs have the ability to self-renew (symmetrical and asymmetrical division) and demonstrate multipotency. Additionally, cancer SCs must be able to recapitulate the heterogeneity of the original tumor.
