Although the Gα and the Gβγ subunits of heterotrimeric G proteins can effect different signaling processes in cells, the mechanisms
that govern their different signaling outcomes have been underappreciated. GoLoco motif-containing proteins bind specifically
to Gα loaded with GDP, and hinder Gβγ from re-associating to Gα. Thus, Gβγ-dependent signals may be sustained. Additionally,
“GoLoco proteins” may have effector functions themselves, particularly in the regulation of cell division.
