The genus Sphaerochaeta was originally proposed and validly published by Ritalahti et al. 2012. Abt et al. published an emended description of this genus in 2012. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Miyazaki et al. in 2014, Arroua et al. in 2017 and Bidzhieva et al. in 2020.
