The species Rhodopirellula caenicola was originally described by Yoon et al. 2015. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 164 in 2015. In 2020, Kallscheuer et al. established as the basonym of (Yoon et al. 2015) Kallscheuer et al. 2021 .
