The species Chlamydia psittaci was originally described by Page 1968. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. García-López et al. published an emended description of this species in 2019. In 1999, Everett et al. established as the basonym of (Lillie 1930) Everett et al. 1999 .
