Nomenclatural History
The family Crenotrichaceae was originally proposed by Hansgirg 1888. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980.

Placement of the genus by Garrity et al (2005) was based on nomenclatural data available at the time the original outlines was assembled. Stoeker et al have more recently reported that Crenothrix belongs in the Methylococcales and that other members of the family originally proposed by Garrity et al being to the Sphingobacterles, incertae sedis.
