Nomenclatural History
The species Methanothrix soehngenii was originally described by Huser et al. 1982. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 10 in 1983. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 75 in 2008. Touzel et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Patel 1985 in 1988.

Methanothrix soehngenii was placed onto the list of rejected species names by Opinion 75. An emendation to the opinion subsequently reversed the rejection.
