The genus Haloanaerobium was originally proposed by Zeikus et al. 1983. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 16 in 1984. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 79 in 2005. Oren corrected this name from Haloanaerobium (sic) to Halanaerobium . Rainey et al. published an emended description of this genus in 1995.
