The genus Acetothermus was originally proposed by Takami et al. 2012. Takami et al. corrected this name from Acetothermus (sic) to Candidatus Acetithermum .
This name is an illegitimate later homonym of Acetothermus Dietrich et al. 1988. It was attempted to be corrected in Takami et al. 2012 prior to publication, but the illegitimate name appeared in several places.
