Nomenclatural History
|
The species Bifidobacterium longum was originally described by Reuter 1963. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Sakata et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Bifidobacterium suis Matteuzzi et al. 1971 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 2002. In 2008, Mattarelli et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Bifidobacterium longum longum (Reuter 1963) Mattarelli et al. 2008
