The genus Pirella was originally proposed and validly published by Schlesner and Hirsch 1984. Schlesner and Hirsch replaced this illegitimate name with (Schlesner and Hirsch 1984) Schlesner and Hirsch 1987 emend. Schlesner et al. 2004 in 1987.

The name Pirella Schlesner and Hirsch 1984 is illegitimate because of precedence of the fungal genus Pirella Bainier 1883 (Rule 51b(4)) Replaced by Pirellula.
